Jazz Toots Thielemans, “Yesterday& Today” (Out of the Blue/Universal, two
discs). History-making to be sure. But also more than a bit of a
disappointment. This double-disc tribute to one of the greatest of all living
jazz musicians—89-year-old harmonica virtuoso Toots Thielemans—is jam-packed
with stuff no one’s ever heard before, most notably some of his earliest
recorded performances when he was known almost exclusively as a guitarist. The
great Toots, though, is on harmonica and even there mostly on the second disc
of this set, despite the murderer’s row of other musicians you’ll hear here,
from Svend Asmussen to Kenny Werner (with, in between, Bob Brookmeyer, Al
Cohn, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Shirley Horn, J.J. Johnson, Hank Jones,
Quincy Jones, Zoot Sims and the like). At his best, it didn’t matter whether
he was playing something like the “Love Theme for ‘The Getaway’ ” or some pop
jazz syrup with too much tinselly electric piano, the sound and the playing of
Thielemans are among the most haunting glories in world music. Even under such
