Wes Montgomery is diplayed in style just before his national stardom (indystar)

Wes Montgomery delivered reliable interpretations of the Great American
Songbook, jazz standards and originals over a career that ran way too short.
Before he hit the big time through a fabled Riverside Records contract
(instigated by a blown-away visitor to Indianapolis named Cannonball
Adderley), Montgomery in 1957 and '58 made the recordings included here on
"Echoes of Indiana Avenue" (Resonance Records). This is more than an unearthed
document of historic stature. It's musically rewarding for 21st-century
listeners, too. The remastered sound is great, with only a little falling off
in the last four tracks, believed to have been taped at the Hub-Bub on 30th
Street (the whole scene has been plastered with the "Indiana Avenue" label,
though many popular clubs thrived elsewhere in the city). The final cut, an
improvised blues, finds Montgomery reaching back to the roots of his
instrument in the country blues. That's on the outside of what's known to be
Montgomery's gift, which focused on a marvelous tone and an incredible run of
ideas, featuring an innate mastery of harmony. There's such a thing as routine
