How much should I weigh for my height?

I’ve heard this question many times, and many times I’ve had a little chuckle to myself. You see, I’m a forty two year old man, standing proud at a whopping five foot, four inches short. I tip the scales at a little over twelve stone. Now, according to experts, I should weigh the same as I did when I was a spotty faced fourteen year old boy.

The thing is, I don’t want to weigh the same as I did all those years ago. I’d look and feel silly. I’d be frightened to walk the streets of my home town without so much about me to fight off a cold, let alone the desperate needle warmers that lurk the damp, cobbled side streets.

I admit it, I am overweight.

In my mind, I carry my weight well. It suits me. I can go out in the rain without the fear of being swept away by a gutter stream, or disappearing down a drain. I don’t get sand kicked in my face at the beach.

Hold on, when was the last time that I stepped foot on a beach?

Oh, that’s right; I last donned my swimming trunks in public when I was about fourteen.

And that’s it! I hate the way I look! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not miserable, and being a touch overweight doesn’t bother me in the slightest when I’m decked out in my baggy shirt and jeans. It’s when I discard the wrapper that I become more self-conscious than a Giraffe in a ‘Polar bears only’ nightclub.

But I can live with it. It doesn’t cause me any distress. I’m fairly healthy according to my doctor. I can live happily without visiting the beach. I’m very lucky and grateful for having this state of mind.

If I have a real problem that causes me or my nearest any stress or pain then I will seek a remedy. If I don’t find a solution straight away then I will carry on my search until something that works for me is found. I really don’t need a chart to tell me how heavy I should be. I can feel how heavy I should be. My brain is my gauge and my body sure won’t hold back to tell me when something needs to be done.

A couple of years ago I decided that I had to quit smoking because my body was telling me so, and it was making me unhappy.

worked for me. It was my decision, based on what my body was telling me and not based on the warning on my cigarette packet.

We live in a society that is forever telling us what we should and shouldn’t eat. We’re not trusted to take care of ourselves. Let us be the judge of that.
