Given both LCD and Plasma TVs are flat and thin, and are the latest gizmos that adorn our living room walls, how Plasma TV is different from LCD TV?

Turns out, the difference is in the display technology used.

What is Plasma Technology?

In a plasma TV, a plasma gas is used to excite visible light particles (or photons). These excited photons then produce color on the screen through the lighting of the pixels into different colors.

The screen comprises of cells surrounded by two glass panels. These panels are separated by a thin slit in which plasma of neon-xenon gas is sealed during the manufacturing. When the Plasma TV is switched on the gas is electrically charged at specific intervals. The charged gas then strikes red, green, and blue phosphors, thus forming a pixel. The pixels combine to form the images.

What is LCD Technology?

LCD televisions have a small wafer containing Polarized Liquid Crystals lit by a backlight. The liquid crystals, when energized by the backlight, block certain colors in each pixels; producing the desired colored image. In LCD TVs, the backlight is always on.

Comparison between the two:

LCD has a lower refresh rate than plasma. So the fast-moving images can sometimes lag behind to show ghost-images However, the technology has improved over the years to refresh rates that are very comparable to plasma.

Liquid crystal display consumes less power for its operation. Also the backlight source in an LCD TV generates less heat than a Plasma TV or old CRTs.

There is no harmful radiation emitted from the screen itself. The LCDs have lesser environmental impact than Plasma TVs.

Plasma TVs are more vulnerable to burn-in of the screen in case of static images. However, this is no longer a grave problem in recent years as a result of the "pixel orbiting" and related improvements.

Plasma screens are brighter, have naturally good contrasts and render deeper blacks than LCDs.

Even the color rendering is better and saturation levels good. For LCDs it’s not so.

LCDs were originally not intended for motion picture purpose. So they have a motion lag in fast moving images. Plasma Screens can display fast moving images succinctly.

If you compare two similar screens, LCDs are lighter in weight than their Plasma counterparts.

If the individual pixels on LCD TV burn out, causing visible black or white spots to appear on the screen, they cannot be repaired; the whole screen would need to be replaced.
