Wes Montgomery is diplayed in style just before his national stardom (indystar)

Wes Montgomery delivered reliable interpretations of the Great American
Songbook, jazz standards and originals over a career that ran way too short.
Before he hit the big time through a fabled Riverside Records contract
(instigated by a blown-away visitor to Indianapolis named Cannonball
Adderley), Montgomery in 1957 and '58 made the recordings included here on
"Echoes of Indiana Avenue" (Resonance Records). This is more than an unearthed
document of historic stature. It's musically rewarding for 21st-century
listeners, too. The remastered sound is great, with only a little falling off
in the last four tracks, believed to have been taped at the Hub-Bub on 30th
Street (the whole scene has been plastered with the "Indiana Avenue" label,
though many popular clubs thrived elsewhere in the city). The final cut, an
improvised blues, finds Montgomery reaching back to the roots of his
instrument in the country blues. That's on the outside of what's known to be
Montgomery's gift, which focused on a marvelous tone and an incredible run of
ideas, featuring an innate mastery of harmony. There's such a thing as routine

In your opinion what are some of the greatest jazz standards ever composed.?

I am new to listening to jazz and I don't like any obscure stuff but rather popular stuff thats been around for years. Please help!

This is one of those questions that is almost impossible to answer, as everyone will just list their personal favorites, but here are what I consider some of the greatest standards:

Cherokee - composed by Ray Noble in the 1930s, but has been played by everyone over the years every since. Truly a jazz standard, if not THE standard. Is the basis for Charlie Parker's watershed composition, "Ko Ko".

Half Nelson - composed by Miles Davis. This has been covered by everyone and is a great workout, musically. Kind of separates the real jazzmen from the wannabees.

Giant Steps - composed by John Coltrane. This tune, with its radical movement from phrase to phrase by major third really set the jazz and musical world on its ear when he first recorded it. People couldn't get ahold of what he was doing. It was extremely advanced and changed jazz materially.

All The Things You Are - Jerome Kern, is a beautiful ballad that most every artist plays at some time or another. A lot of musicians will wryly refer to it as "All The Chords There Are" for it's modulations.

Lush Life - by Billy Strayhorn is perhaps the greatest jazz ballad ever written and one that every jazz singer records.

Take the A Train - Billy Strayhorn/Duke Ellington is one of THE standards in that everyone always plays and everyone who plays jazz knows it.

I could list fifty great standards, but I tried to select what I considered really defining tunes that are played the most and that are considered greatest standards.
