Backlit computer screens may exacerbate insomnia by altering the body's
circadian rhythm, prompting solutions to help gadget owners sleep soundly.

The blue and green light iPads and mobile phones emit is even better than TVs
and lamps at tricking the brain into staying awake, research says. These
wavelengths suppress melatonin production and delay sleepiness, according to
neuroscientist Steven Lockley of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

The researchers found blue light triggers the strongest response in neurons,
even altering the body clocks of blind subjects, making it highly effective at
promoting alertness.

Lockley says most scientists previously thought green light had little effect
on sleep patterns, but now he warns that it too is "not as safe as we
thought."

This research could explain why over 40 percent of Americans who used
technology at night reported trouble sleeping last year.

Teenagers are especially prone to electronics-induced insomnia, as are
technology addicts who cannot live without constantly checking their
smartphones.

Psychologists like Lisa Merlo, director of psychotherapy at the University of
Florida, say electronics users often complain, "I can't turn off my mind and
fall asleep," which often adds to the difficulty.
