I want to take up piano. I need opinions on where to start?

I recently have been inspired by piano. I have absolutely no musical background (however, I do have an appreciation for classical music) and just bought a basic electric piano.

I am wondering if I should start with learning how to thoroughly read sheet music before I even touch the keyboard.
Or, choose a favourite piece, look up the notes and play the rest by ear.
Or, (excessive Or'ing lol) learn AND play very basic sheet music (Mary had a little lamb, anyone? lol)

I know that lessons would be the best option, but I just want to play for leisure and fun and learn at my own pace. I just want to know what would be the best way to get started.

Actually, learn the location of the notes first on the piano. First, learn where middle C is. It should be around your bellybutton if you sit in the middle of the bench. Each octave follows a set pattern (c to c, etc.).

Next, learn rhythms. There are different types of beats. Quarter note is 1 second (beat). Half note is two quarter notes (2 beats). Whole note is four beats or four quarter notes.

Then, learn the location of the notes on the page for the right hand only, using the acronyms: Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge (EGBDF as your line notes) and FACE as your space notes. This is right hand only.

Once you have mastered the note locations on the page, you should be able to play simple songs with the right hand.

Then you can move to the left hand which (Surprise!) has different note locations (a step below) than the right.

Honestly, though, even if it is a bit overwhelming at first, definitely try it. Playing piano is awesome
