How necessary is it to be able to read sheet music?

Me and my friend are both amateur musicians (me on the violin, her on the guitar) and we were having a debate a while back over the importance of being able to read sheet music.

See, as part of my violin lessons I am required to be able to read sheet music, and I also have to be able to read it in order to pass my exams.

My friend, on the other hand, is teaching herself and is using youtube as a guide to playing the songs she wants to learn, and has no interest in learning to read sheet music.

Obviously we both respect each other's way of learning music, but it did get me wondering. How essential is it to be able to read sheet music?

Without learning to read music you will never be a versatile musician. You can't just on the spur of the moment play an unknown piece of music. As was said, with guitar the basic chord structure is written in the music, but that does limit the player to just those cords and they can't read other music. I play violin, if someone puts any music in front of me that is written in treble clef, I can read and play it. I frequently flay flute music or read off of piano music. The only possible advantage to not reading music, if they get good enough, the brain can learn to improvise better. But I know many music reading players who are also incredible improvisers.
