Do I Do Visions? (Metafilter)

The SF Jazz Collective just began their month-long Spring 2012 tour. Each year
since 2004 the eight musicians have selected a composer to honor — including
many of the usual suspects: Coltrane, Hancock, Monk, Shorter, Tyner. (In 2013
it will be Chick Corea) This year, changing things up a bit, they've decided
to showcase the music of Stevland Hardaway Morris.

From the group's website: "Each year, the ensemble performs a new list of
compositions by a modern jazz master and new pieces by the Collective members
(commissioned by SFJAZZ). Through this pioneering approach, simultaneously
honoring jazz's recent history while championing the music's up-to-the-minute
directions, the Collective embodies SFJAZZ's commitment to jazz as a living,

the group's arrangements of _Do I Do_, _Superstition_, and _Visions_. An NPR
video I like even better, posted last week, of group drummer Eric Harland
(accompanied by the group's trumpeter Avishai Cohen) playing sheet metal in an
abandoned fort. Group vibraphonist Stefon Harris giving a TED talk last
November on how "There are no mistakes on the bandstand."
