The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the worlds most famous wall coverings

The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the most famous wall coverings in the world. It is a Tapestry wall covering and is famous for it’s prediction of the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066 in southern England. The wall covering is actually an embroidery and is stitched and not woven.

The original Bayeux Tapestry wall covering is displayed in the town of Bayeux in Northern France. It is over 70 metres long and was likely embroidered in Kent in southern England. A copy of the wall covering was made and hangs in Reading Museum, England.

It is thought that William the Conquerers half brother Bishop Odo of Bayeux ordered the wall covering to be made. His purpose it commissioning such a huge wall covering was to record the conquest of England by Duke William of France, who became known as William the Conquerer.

The Tapestry wall covering is made up of sections or scenes depicting the events and characters leading up to the battle. It starts with a scene from Westminster Palace in 1064, 2 years before Hastings, the King of England Edward the Confessor is talking with his brother-in-law Harold Godwinson the Earl of Essex.

The tapestry wall covering continues with Harold being captured by Normandy’s Count Guy and then being released into William Duke of Normandy hand. Harold then fights for William against France’s northern Earls.

The wall covering now reaches one of its most critical and controversial stages. On the wall covering it shows Harold swearing an oath to William. The points is, was Harold promising to support William in his quest to become England’s king when Edward died.

When Harold is free he returns to England. Edward dies in January and Harold is enthroned as King much to the annoyance of Duke William. William embarks on an invasion plan and duly lands on England’s shores on the 28 Sept 1066. Although the Tapestry wall covering does not show it Harold is in the North of England fighting another claimant to his throne. After beating that army he rushes south to meet William.

We now meet back up in time with the tapestry wall covering and they meeting at Hastings on the morning of October 1066. The wall covering is very detailed in its depiction of the battle showing how the battle ebbed and flowed.

Considering the wall covering is made up of just stitches it is able to give you the feeling that you are part of the scenes and re-creates the feelings and thoughts of the people involved accurately. It shows in detail, arrows, spears and even eyes and the whole bottom part of the wall covering is filled with dead bodies.

The next part of the wall covering is the most famous, as it shows Harold being killed. It seems to show Harold being killed twice, through the eye and with a sword. But it could be he was shot through the eye and when on the ground he was finished off with the sword.
